Small Shift worked with Penrith City Council, supported by Mission Australia, Evolve Housing and Community Greening, to facilitate a positive social change through public space improvement in Kingswood, a suburb in Greater Western Sydney. Small Shift supported Kingswood community to reimagine and create a welcoming gateway to the suburb with quick and easy placemaking ideas that aim to improve the perception of safety, social opportunities and the look and feel of the area.
The community set up two street libraries for books (one looked after Mission Australia as part of their Rooby Roo – Paint Penrith REaD program), a food pantry and two planter boxes all beautifully hand-painted. The Council is installing a new bench to complete the project. The project success is demonstrated post-implementation as the locals continue to restock the pantry and libraries and tend the plants.
